A memory I will cherish is being able to listen to Jim Weiss tell stories. Both during the school day with my students as well as for the evening session where I was able to bring my daughter as well. We had such a great time!

A lower-school boy walked by the front desk (on his way to see Daryl) and saw my MP3 player. It prompted him to ask, “Is that your cell phone?”
“No.” I told him. “I don’t own a cell phone.” His eyes widened and his mouth gaped open. Today’s boys of less than ten years of age have a hard time with the idea of adults without cell phones. “Why not?” He asked.
“Because I really don’t need or even want one.” I said.
“Do you have email?” He asked.
“Yes.” I said. “I have three different email addresses.”
“Wow! Is that because you don’t have a cell phone?” He asked.

I sat with a group of kindergarten with a basket of colorful fruits and vegetables. We talked about eating a few colors daily at lunch. After twenty minutes or so boys questioned about the lunches. One boy I noticed was overly attentive throughout the session, finally raised his hand. "Ms Matthew, he said. "I love your ear rings."
Another time, I sat with a kindergarten group and talked about my heritage. I mentioned that my forefathers came from Africa. During the question and answer, one boy asked, "Ms Matthew, why are you allowed to have four fathers in Africa and only one in America.

I will remember the first year I came to Allen-Stevenson and on the half day before we started our Winter Break, everyone was invited to chip in 10 bucks or so for a Holiday party to be held downstairs in the Lower Gym/Multipurpose area. Frank Spiniella was running the show and I was shocked to find out that there was dance music, lights everywhere and booze flowing (my last school didn't allow alcohol on campus at all). Mudslides, Jello Shots, margaritas... It was a wild time and the best way to kick off the holidays. And I think there were some major hookups (Dan and Ariane???). Those were the days...

More food for thought. Can you name all the Allen-Stevenson couples that have existed over the years?

About 12 years ago, as we returned from Spring break on April Fools day, John Finch the Upper School head had told the boys that the floors had been just waxed and they needed to take off their shoes as they walked on the floors. After having all the boys fall for this he announced that it was an April Fools joke. To get even with him several of the boys, with the help of the Frank Spinella, put all of his office furniture on the roof.
